Buhari eases lockdown measures, bans non-essential inter-state movement

- President Buhari has eased the lockdown in Lagos, Ogun and the FCT - The president made this known in a nationwide broadcast to Nigerians on Monday, 27 - New nationwide measures were however introduced including a ban on non-essential inter-state passenger travel until further notice President Muhammadu Buhari has eased the lockdown measures imposed on Lagos, Abuja and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja beginning from Saturday, May 2. The president made this known in a nationwide broadcast to Nigerians on Monday, 27 after the end of a one-month lockdown since Monday, March 30. President Buhari stated that the decision is in line with the recommendations of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, various federal government committees and the Nigeria Governors Forum. 

He said: “I have approved a phased and gradual easing of lockdown measures in FCT, Lagos and Ogun states effective from Monday, 4th May 2020. 

“However, this will be followed strictly with aggressive reinforcement of testing and contact tracing measures while allowing the restoration of some economic and business activities in certain sectors.” He also revealed that new nationwide measures are to be introduced as follows; 1. There will be an overnight curfew from 8 pm to 6 am. This means all movements will be prohibited during this period except for essential services; 2. There will be a ban on non-essential inter-state passenger travel until further notice; 3. Partial and controlled interstate movement of goods and services will be allowed for the movement of goods and services from producers to consumers; and 4. We will strictly ensure the mandatory use of face masks or coverings in public in addition to maintaining physical distancing and personal hygiene. Furthermore, the restrictions on social and religious gatherings shall remain in place. State governments, corporate organisations and philanthropists are encouraged to support the production of cloth masks for citizens. 

He stated that the lockdown in the FCT, Lagos and Ogun states shall remain in place until the new ones come into effect on Monday, May 4. He further revealed that the Presidential Task Force will provide sector-specific details to allow for preparations by governments, businesses and institutions.

Lagos ‘lawyer’ disowned by NBA goes into hiding

Nigerians have expressed anger at a Lagos-based ‘lawyer’ and critic, Adeola Samuel-Ilori, after he was disowned by the Nigerian Bar Association. Lawyers and activists, who took to different social media platforms, said they were also shocked that Samuel-Ilori refused to respond to the disclaimer after several days. Our correspondent learnt that the ‘lawyer’ had switched off his phones and had remained incommunicado since the story broke.
